Southeast District of Columbia man sentenced to
seven years in prison for role in 2007 non-fatal shooting
 

Washington, D.C. – A 19-year-old Southeast District of Columbia man, Travis Miles, has been sentenced to a total of seven years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release for his role in the shooting of a 29-year-old man on December 28, 2007, U.S. Attorney Jeffrey A. Taylor announced today.

Miles, of the 2900 block of M Street, SE, Washington, D.C., received his sentence yesterday before the Honorable Harold L. Cushenberry, Jr., of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. On June 16, 2008, the defendant pled guilty to the charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.

According to the government’s evidence, on December 28, 2007, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Travis Miles and an armed accomplice approached the 29-year-old victim who was seated in a vehicle in the 2900 block of N Street, SE, Washington, D.C. (PSA 605). At gunpoint, Travis and his accomplice forced their way into the victim’s car where they demanded his money. The victim complied with their demand. However, Miles and his accomplice were not satisfied and demanded more money. Upon the victim’s refusal, at gunpoint, the victim was ordered to exit the vehicle. As he did so, Miles’ armed accomplice fired two gunshots, striking the victim once and causing serious bodily injury. Both Miles and the accomplice fled the scene, leaving the victim for dead.

In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Taylor commended the outstanding work of D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Detectives Thomas Sepulveda, Kevin Tighe, Robert Kacelowicz, Andrew Richardson, Ucrania Morales Paniagua, Anthony McGee, Master Patrol Officer Kenneth Gibbs, and Officers Wade Zech, Miguel Rodriguezgil, Katrina Everett, and Elmo English of the Sixth District; Edward Wise, Ramonz Height, Nathaniel Covington, and Sheila Gary, with Crime Scene Search; Jonathan Pope of the Firearms Examination Section; and Gloria Graves of the Fingerprint Examination Section. Mr. Taylor also thanked the assistance provided by Paralegal Anthony Griffith. Finally, he commended Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily A. Miller of the Sixth District Felony Major Crimes Section who investigated and prosecuted this case.
